Jack Johnson added to Bridge Benefit line-up

jack-johnson-picture-2Singer Jack Johnson has been added to the 2013 Bridge School Benefit line-up.

Jambands.com is reporting that Johnson will join Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Queens of the Stone Age, My Morning Jacket, Elvis Costello, Fun., Diana Krall, Heart and Jenny Lewis for the event, which is set to take place October 26 and 27 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain Views, CA. Johnson has been added to the bill following The Killers’ recent cancellation.

Jack Johnson is no stranger to charitable performances, seeing as all of his live shows are essentially benefit concerts. For years, Johnson has put all of his touring proceeds into his Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation

Johnson performed at the benefit in 2002 and had this to say:

“At the event, you felt such a part of the mission for them,” Kim recalls of the annual concerts, which raise funds for the school dedicated to helping physically challenged children overcome their impairments through the use of technology. “It was a special gathering—you felt like part of a family. We thought, ‘We want to do something similar.’”

Killers jump Bridge

The Killers have announced they will not be performing at the 2013  Bridge School Benefit, scheduled for Oct. 26 and 27 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountainview, Calif.

Bridge-SchoolThe Bridge School officials made this announcement on the website:

” The Killers will regretfully no longer be able to participate in this year’s Bridge School Benefit in San Francisco, CA on October 26th.”

“We are so disappointed we won’t be able to participate in this year’s Bridge School Benefit,” said Killers drummer Ronnie Vannucci.  “The fact of the matter is, without Mark on tour with us right now, we simply aren’t able to prepare an acoustic set for one of the year’s most important music charity events properly. We never want to give less than 100 percent, and in this particular instance, we simply won’t be able to.  We know this is a disappointment for our fans in the Bay Area, for which we’re very sorry, but hopefully we will be able to team up with Bridge School again in the future. It’s an amazing charity, and we encourage our fans to show them a lot of love and support.”

The line-up includes Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Queens of the Stone Age, My Morning Jacket, Tom Waits (Sunday only), Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, fun, Heart and Jenny Lewis.

Tickets are available at Live Nation.

CSNY, Killers, Queens of the Stone Age to Play Bridge School Benefit

Andy Greene 2 hours ago

This year’s Bridge School Benefit will feature performances by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Queens of the Stone Age, My Morning Jacket, the Killers, Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, Fun., Heart and Jenny Lewis.

Per tradition, every artist will play a completely acoustic set. The show will be held October 26th and October 27th at the Shoreline Ampitheater in Mountain View, CA. Tickets go on sale September 13th at 10:00 AM.

Bridge School Benefit 2013 will mark Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s first performance since their Freedom of Speech tour wrapped in September of 2006. CSNY, Elvis Costello and My Morning Jacket have played the Bridge School Benefit in the past, but this year will mark the first performances for the rest of the artists.  (The Killers will only play on October 26th. All the others will be at both shows.)

The Bridge School Benefit was first held in 1986 and has been staged (with the exception of 1987) every year since. It’s always 100% acoustic, leading to completely unique sets from A-list artists like Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, the Who, Metallica, Arcade Fire, Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Tom Petty, Simon and Garfunkel and countless others.

Neil and Pegi Young founded the Bridge School when they were unable to find adequate schooling for their physically challenged son Ben. “He was in a program for special ed students at a school and had some good friends,” Pegi told Rolling Stone in 2010. “But they decided to move the special ed program off campus. This isn’t unusual and I was really sad about it. I was talking to [Neil Young’s manager] Elliot [Roberts] and he said, ‘Why don’t you just start your own school, Peg?’ And I was like, ‘Okay, there’s an idea.’ It just kind of blossomed from there.”

They held the first show in 1986 to raise funds for the new school. “Neil came up with the acoustic format idea,” said Pegi. “It was genius. Nobody was doing that at the time. This is before MTV Unplugged or any of that. It keeps costs down, and it took artists outside their comfort zone. Looking back, that first concert was an exercise in simplicity compared to what it is these days.”
