Americana to hit stores on June 5th

Neil Young And Crazy Horse to Release New Album ‘Americana’ on June 5th
Disc features traditional American songs like ‘Tom Dooley’ and ‘This Land Is Your Land’
By Andy Greene, March 19, 2012 8:00 PM ET

Neil Young and Crazy Horse will release their new LP Americana on June 5th. It’s their first album together since Greendale in 2003, and their first album with the full Crazy Horse line-up of Billy Talbot, Ralph Molina and Frank “Poncho” Sampedro since Broken Arrow in 1996. The songs on Americana are all classic American folk songs, including “This Land Is Your Land,” “Gallows Pole,” “Tom Dooley” and “Clementine.”

At the Slamdance Film Festival earlier this year, Young talked about the album. “A very young choir of children plays with Crazy Horse [on the album,]” he said. “They’re songs we all know from kindergarden, but Crazy Horse has rearranged them, and they now belong to us.”

“What ties these songs together is the fact that while they may represent an America that may no longer exist,” says a press release announcing the new album.”The emotions and scenarios behind these songs still resonate with what’s going on in the country today with equal, if not greater impact nearly 200 years later. The lyrics reflect the same concerns and are still remarkably meaningful to a society going through economic and cultural upheaval, especially during an election year. They are just as poignant and powerful today as the day they were written.”

The disc was recorded at Audio Casa Blanca and was produced by Neil Young and John Hanlon with Mark Humphreys.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse made their first live appearance since 2004 last month at the MusicCares tribute to Paul McCartney in Los Angeles. They played “I Saw Her Standing There” that many critics called a highlight of the star-studded show, though the band has released no touring plans. “I honestly have not heard a solitary thing about touring,” Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina wrote on his Facebook page last month.

Here is the complete track-listing for Americana:
“Oh Susannah”
“Tom Dooley”
Gallows Pole
“Get A Job
“Travel On
“High Flyin’ Bird
“She’ll Be Comin ’Round The Mountain”
“This Land Is Your Land
“Wayfarin’ Stranger
“God Save The Queen”

OK… here’s the whole TRUTH and nothing but
about Neil, Buffalo Springfield, Americana and Crazy Horse.
Read it and weep (your choice—tears of joy or sorrow)

After a solo project ol’ knee-jerk Neil now naturally is gravitating towards recording with a band. Combine that with Neil’s compulsive need to retrace Zimmy’s holy bootprints you’ll soon see that Neil’s taking yet another journey through Bob’s past, going anywhere and everywhere Bob has already been before.

Speaking of old paths traveled, the fact is that Neil’s real up in the air about releasing Archives 2 this Xmas. Economic slumps sure hurt $ales and the record industry is in shambles. Hawking multi-disc sets is hella risky any day of the week. One problem is that Neil’s stash of soon-to-be released unreleased albums for his newly repackaged “I shall be Released” series of unreleased releases will soon run out. Looks like Neil has to come up with even more new-old authentic Neil Young-type songs and legendary side projects for both past and future released unreleased albums. In the meantime Neil’s facing another Dylanesque dark side of a street… standing at the crossroads of “Writer’s Block” and “No New Songs”.

The fall back plan at this point is that Neil’s going to release a Xmas record right after Americana. Of course the Shakey one wants his oldest musical associates along for the ride. The old same-ol’-same-ol’ crew as always before, just different this time. Don’t tell anyone but here’s a just-leaked-on the internet unreleased pre-release-unreleased songlist….

    1–White Christmas
2–I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus
    3–The Christmas Song
    4–Holly Jolly Christmas
5–Let me Hang my Balls on your Christmas Tree
    6–Frosty the Snowman
    7–Jingle Bells
    8–Blue Christmas
9–Grandma got run over by a Reindeer
10-All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth
    11-Mamacita, donde esta Santa Claus?
    12-Little Saint Nick
13-Santa Claus is coming to town

Look for lots of Neil’s heavy pals to join in on this Xmas project.
We’re talking Willie, Emmy Lou, Dave, John, Brooooce, Steve, David, Graham and even Bob himself.
Don’t worry…. if the Xmas album doesn’t work out just remember Neil’s got an unreleased children’s album (everybody loves that new song Leia–right?) that he just might release instead.

Elliot’s always sniffing fresh wads of cash. Mass quantities of scratch continue to accumulate right there under his nose wherever he goes. Fact is that his boy Neil just jumped back high in the mega-sales solo saddle giddy-app-ing along on a horse named Le Noise. His success justifies Elliot’s rap that Neil’s the biggest fuckin’ draw there ever was or will ever be. When the Springfield tour thing came up he told Neil to just fuggedabouit… names like Buffalo Springfield and CSN are ancient second string history. Dinosaurs don’t matter. NEIL YOUNG and only NEIL YOUNG really matters most on the marquis.

Elliot’s ego stroking stimulates Neil’s obsessive need for time-travel. Neil loves to get “lost” on the time-travel trip, if you know what I mean. With Neil stuck in “lost in time” mode, Elliot went out and power-lunched Stills & Furay. “Hey guys, there’s a humongous payday for everyone if you update for the road. You got to name-change the name from the old “Buffalo Springfield” to the new “NEIL YOUNG & Buffalo Springfield” if you want mo’ money”. The big El’s proposition had both Stills and Furay looking quite ill while reaching for their medicine chests. Ritchie prayed hard hoping it could work out.

Taking further emergency action Elliot flew in Crosby and Nash in another brazen attempt to change Stills’ and Furay’s mind. At one point they all thought about changing CSN&Y into “NEIL YOUNG & CSN”. Stills ego suddenly exploded showing the full wrath of his demonic dark side as he belched smoke and fire across the room. Old memories stung everyone like devil-held pitchforks totally spooking the deal. Ritchie, Crosby and Nash got out of there pronto.

Now with his NEIL YOUNG & Buffalo Springfield or NEIL YOUNG & CSN dream tours sinking fast Neil and Elliot took their second choice…. the beloved garage-grunging Crazy Horse. Everyone knows the Horse members are totally aware that without Neil at the helm they can’t record or plan a tour without losing their shirts. Of course the band’s called “NEIL YOUNG & Crazy Horse” because that’s what’s been the bill right from day one.

OK… now why is Neil using the Horse for his latest obsession… the Americana theme.
First of all the Horse will do whatever Neil tells them to do. They need the cash. Neil thinks that digging the ol’ Horse up from the geriatric barn is a historic archeological project fitting in perfectly with Neil’s current Americana mania. It’s a Proustian thing with Shakey… remembrances of tours past. Neil gonna use old Americana chestnuts in the same way that Dylan riffed off Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk music getting together with the Band at big pink recording the basement tapes.

It looks like there’s going to be a NEIL YOUNG & Crazy Horse Americana summer tour to promote the album. They’re going to go Greendale again setting up a theatrical experience for those willing to pay the price for solid gold tour tix plus service charge. It’s going to be an old-time wild west medicine show with Neil selling bottles of his special magic elixir snake-oil cure-all. The show starts off with just Neil sitting around the campfire telling tales, hawking snake oil and t-shirts while singing old Americana type songs. As the setlist progresses the Horse steps onstage out one by one to accompany him on each tune until the whole band is onstage. It’s like Shakey’s version of the Talking Heads Stop Making Sense tour.

I’m sure Neil-heads everywhere will love fifteen minute Horse mega-jams on classics like “Oh Susannah” “She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain” or “I’ve been Working on the Railroad”. There’s a rumor going around that all Americana shows will end with “Indian War Whoop”, off the Harry Smith Anthology. Outside of that – it’s going to be a changing setlist, unlike the last Le Noise tour. Right now Neil’s picking the when, where and which songs he’s going to play with the Horse.

Here’s another scoop. The whole Americana tour will seem spontaneous but the reality is that it’ll be totally scripted out. That’s because trans-techie-Neil’s gone overboard on the latest 3-D holographic technology. He’s up at the ranch right now secretly filming 3-D holographs of himself and Pegi singing songs for the entire tour. The ready-made 3-D holograms are going to be projected on the stage during the tour. The audience wouldn’t know the difference. That’s right…. Neil’s not going to go on road to tour with the Horse except as a hologram. That way Neil can do what he really wants to do…. tag along with Pegi occasionally sitting in with his old band when they tour Europe this summer. Elliot loves the idea.

    “There’s a sucker born every minute”— P. T. Barnum
How’s that for a slice of Americana?

Like Bob Dylan, with whom he is most comparable, Young periodically falls in and out of favor with public taste, but at no point in the past has that stunted his ambition.
