Americana: “God Save the Queen” Video

GodSaveTheQueen

and no, it’s not the Sex Pistols

May 25th ’12 by amrit @ 12:32pm2012/05/25

If you’re expecting a Sex Pistols cover here, you haven’t seen Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s (excellent) “Oh Susannah” video, or heard much of anything about the conceit behind the outfit’s first album together in almost a decade: Called Americana, this LP sees Neil and Horses taking on standards from the great American folk songbook.

So this “God Save The Queen” is the original “God Save The Queen,” the one that served as the American national anthem before Francis Scott Key watched canons blaring across a harbor and set it to tune. (Also, the politics of this rendition are wonderfully scattershot, in that we have a Canadian singing a British tune for an album called Americana.)

The footage here is of Queen Elizabeth, promenading presumably on her Silver Jubilee, which is nice timing because next month the UK will party it up for her Diamond Jubilee, celebrating 60 years on the throne. (This makes her the second-longest running monarch, following only her great-grandmother Victoria who hung out on the chair for 63 years.

Facts here: http://www.thestar.com/travel/europe/article/1185183–queen-s-diamond-jubilee-where-to-celebrate-in-the-uk ) This is also nice timing because Neil’s album comes out next month, too — on June 5th — so feel free to enjoy it as a promotional asset for either of those June-rooted events. She’ll Be Comin’ ‘Round the Mountain premiere; zoundtrack + video

She’ll Be Comin’ ‘Round the Mountain premiere. Neil Young and Crazy Horse still have it. Turning and dancing.

Jesus Chariot liner notes:

Written in the 1800s based on an old Negro spiritual, this song refers to the second coming of Jesus and “she” is the chariot Jesus is coming on. Some interpret this as the end of the world. Others have said that “she” refers to union organizer Mary Harris “Mother” Jones going to promote formation of labor unions in the Appalachian coal mining camps. The Americana arrangement continues the folk process with a new melody, a new title and a combination of lyric sources.

untracked version is here.

“This song, as with all the songs on the record, have been paired up with archival footage. This footage is from an early scene in D.W.  Griffith’s controversial 1915 film Birth of a Nation, in which the  Southern Cameron family hosts a farewell ball for soldiers fighting  for the Confederacy.

“Lord sing halleluja”, jessas. About the Euphemisms of today. May it be, that Neil here finally gets political? The Confederacy?

“Americana” BlueRay coming

Neil writes on his neilyoung.com/news “NY Times”:

May 7, 2012
For those of you who want to hear 100 %, of the audio, the Americana Bluray is the place to get it. Even the new “mastered for I-tunes” tracks available of CrazyHorse’s Americana will have only 5% of the original audio while the CD has just 15%. The Bluray has 100%. On the Bluray you can hear all of the nuances of the CrazyHorse sound exactly as recorded by John Hanlon at Audio Casablanca Studio. If you want the best, now you have a choice. The Americana Bluray also contains 12 videos of the Americana songs, with an alternate version of “Clementine,” plus documentary footage of the Americana choir as it was being recorded at East West Studios in LA.
The only other place to get the quality audio is the vinyl Americana, which originates from the original audio masters.
video imageClick here to see the Audio Casablanca studio as it plays back “Horseback,” although you will not be hearing the audio quality on this lo res MP3 stream. ”

This is actually the 37 min version of “Horseback”, linked here recently; it has parts of Cortez et al.
