Bert Jansch, the mystery master of acoustic guitar

the mystery master of acoustic guitar many music lovers have never heard of

Jim Farber, Thursday, April 21st 2011, 4:00 AM

Bert Jansch will be performing at Avery Fisher Hall Sunday, April 24 and Monday, April 25.

Jimmy Page ripped off his arrangement of the traditional folk song “Blackwaterside” on Led Zeppelin’s debut.

Neil Young used his song “Needle Of Death,” as the template for his own 1974 wasteland epic “Ambulance Blues.”

And songwriters from Paul Simon, Nick Drake and Donovan to Devendra Banhart, Johnny Marr and Bernard Butler have aped or honored his style.

What a shame, then, that so few fans have heard the name, or the work, of Bert Jansch. (To make matters more obscure, most people pronounce his last name “Yanch,” while he opts for “Jansh”).

To shed a wider light on this master acoustic guitarist — and, presumably, to pay back a sonic debt — Neil Young has asked Jansch to open several legs of his current solo tour, the latest of which comes to Avery Fisher Hall Sunday and Monday.

According to Jansch, 67, the two legends first collided back in the late ’60s.

“He came to the Troubadour in L.A. to meet me, but I can’t only barely remember it,” he says. “At time time I didn’t know who he was.”

Canadian folk-rocker Neil Young will play Toronto’s Massey Hall on May 10-11 as part of his previously announced solo North American tour in support of his latest album, Le Noise.

Tickets, $89.50, $139.50 & $189.50, go on sale Friday (April 15) at Ticketmaster, the Roy Thomson Hall box office, by phone at 1-855-985-5000 or online at livenation.com , masseyhall.com, roythomson.com and ticketmaster.ca

Young’s opening act will be Bert Jansch.

The Massey Hall concerts are also scheduled to be captured on film by director Jonathan Demme, as the final installment in a concert film trilogy, joining 2006’s Neil Young: Heart of Gold and 2008’s Neil Young Trunk Show.

The Toronto-born, Winnipeg-raised Young, who will play both acoustic and electric guitar at the Massey shows, was recently in T.O. where he picked up two Junos for artist of the year and adult alternative album of the year for Le Noise and the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award.

The 65-year-old singer-musician also recently won his second-ever Grammy for best rock song for Angry World, a track off Le Noise, produced by Canadian Daniel Lanois (U2, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, The Neville Brothers).
The Massey Hall concerts will take place 40 years after Young’s legendary 1971 solo Massey Hall concert, in which he unveiled many of the songs that would form the body of one of his most celebrated albums, Harvest.

Neil at Massey Hall (May 10 and 11)

Sharry reports:  “Neil is coming to Massey Hall on May 10 and 11. I’m so happy to hear this excellent news! I plan to get tickets for both shows. Bob is just interested in attending one show, so I guess I’ll be going solo on the second night. The dates occur on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, so I’ll have to request permission to leave work early on those nights. Massey Hall is within walking distance of where I work, so that makes things easier.”

On-sale date for the general public is Friday
(April 15) at 10:00 a.m. for both May 10 and 11.

Ticket prices — They range from $104.64 ($89.50 + $15.14 in fees) to
$204.64 ($189.50 + $15.14 in fees).
