45 years ago Buffalo Springfield performs last concert

For What it’s worth….

On May 5, 1968, Buffalo Springfield gave their last concert at the Long Beach Arean in California.

According to an article by Dave Swanson at  the website “Ultimate Classic Rock.”

‘Buffalo Springfield were always a house of cards caught in a hurricane. Neil Young was — and still is — famous for going wherever his muse takes him, others be damned. From the band’s earliest days Young had issues to deal with, including the onset of epilepsy, constant drug use, and apprehension about the band management and the music business in general. On May 5, 1968, Buffalo Springfield gave their final performance as a group.

Stephen Stills Breaks Silence on Short-Lived Buffalo Springfield Reunion

By Andy Greene
November 5, 2012 3:10 PM ET

As Rolling Stone has previously reported, Buffalo Springfield were originally slated for a 30-date reunion tour this year – until Neil Young decided to devote his attention to a new project with Crazy Horse. “I’d be on a tour of my past for the rest of fucking time,” Young said in June. “I have to be able to move forward. I can’t be relegated. I did enough of it for right then.”

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Stephen Stills breaks his silence about the aborted Buffalo Springfield reunion. “We were supposed to work for most of the summer,” he says. “It left me in a lurch for three quarters and ruined my financial planning. Also, 150 people got laid off that were supposed to work on the tour.”

The surviving members of Buffalo Springfield re-formed after 42 years to play Young’s 2010 Bridge School Benefit. The next year they played seven shows, including a set at Bonnaroo. “We didn’t go all that trouble for seven shows,” Stills says. “That’s what impetuosity will do for you. You can’t go off half-cocked . . . When Neil is involved you anything you need a seatbelt.”

Graham Nash recently explained to New York radio station Q104.3 that Crosby and Nash had originally planned on touring this past summer as duo. “A Buffalo Springfield tour was canceled by Neil,” said Nash. “It left Stephen in a hole in many ways: friendship-wise, work-wise, financial-wise. It left him in a huge hole. When David and I heard that we went over to Stephen and we told him we would cancel every Crosby and Nash gig and go out as Crosby, Stills and Nash. We were there for him because we love Stephen Stills. Not only because he’s a good friend, but because he’s an insanely talented musician.”

Despite the change of plans, Stills says he isn’t angry at Young. “He was very kind to me in his book,” he says. “I can’t be unkind about it . . . Working with Neil is a privilege, not a right.”

Young did say that Buffalo Springfield isn’t necessarily dead forever. “There is the seed of something great still there,” he said. “It’s worth exploring again.”

Does Stills think they might tour again one day? “For the purpose of this interview,” he says. “No.”

Neil Explains Buffalo Springfield’s Aborted Reunion

By Andy Greene
June 4, 2012 11:50 AM ET

Last year Buffalo Springfield reunited for a seven-date tour, but an additional planned 30 dates were called off with little explanation. In the new issue of Rolling Stone, Neil Young says he’s not completely closed off to the idea of touring with the group at some point in the future.

“That could happen,” says Young, who will release his first album with Crazy Horse in nine years this week. “But it’s not happening now. I’d be on a tour of my past for the rest of fucking time, which I can’t do. I have to be able to move forward. I can’t be relegated. I did enough of it for right then, but there is this seed of something great still there. It’s worth exploring again.”

UPDATE:  From Buffalo Springfield Postpone Reunion Tour Again | Rolling Stone Music By Andy Greene:

“This delay happened for a multitude of reasons,” Richie Furay’s manager David Spero tells Rolling Stone. “The plan is still to tour next year. There’s not a timeline at this point. Buffalo Springfield is at the top of Neil’s list or priorities. It’s just a matter of finding a time that works for everybody.”

“I’m writing a book, don’t mess with the muse!”

“I’m writing a book, I wanna be alone.”

Buffalo Springfield Tour Cancelled

i.e.:  BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD:  On Indefinite Hold 8/30/2011

Despite earlier reports, Buffalo Springfield will not be hitting the road early next year after canceling plans to tour this fall. And Stephen Stills says they probably won’t tour for a while. He tells us, “Neil [Young] started a book and said, ‘Don’t mess with the muse, man.'” Stills adds that he’ll probably tour next summer with Crosby, Stills and Nash.

Buffalo Springfield reunited in 2010 for Neil Young’s annual Bridge School benefit and then played seven shows this past June — six in California and the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee. CSN was scheduled to play shows at New York’s Beacon Theatre tonight and tomorrow, but will perform only tomorrow night, as tonight’s show has been pushed to November 6th with a second show to be announced.

They’ll also make up last Saturday’s canceled benefit on Long Island, New York later this week. Stills will tour this fall with Young’s wife, Pegi Young, as his opening act. David Crosby and Graham Nash will tour Europe this fall. http://www.wmgk.com/music/news/story.aspx?ID=1530078

IMHO, ED2: they talk to much, that’s what might shy others off.

When OHIO was written 40 years ago it was a thing done on instinct. I felt moved to do it and I\'m glad I had Crosby Stills and Nash there with me. 40 years later I feel the same way. It was all just too real and that hasn\'t changed. To those who knew the 4 and survived to see today, I say peace and love be with you.
