Bradley Cooper plays air guitar to “Down by the River”

Bradley CooperThis has certainly been making the rounds in the Neil Young community.

Actor Bradley Cooper performs on  ‘The Tonight Show,’ playing air guitar to a Neil Young classic while wearing an Afro wig.

The whole thing happened thanks to host Jimmy Fallon, who not only outfitted Cooper with his ridiculous headgear — in honor of Cooper’s 40th birthday on Jan. 5 — but fed him a question about how the actor has “a little” musical talent.

As it turns out, that talent only goes as far as the air guitar, and Cooper’s mastery of the invisible instrument is mainly centered around his prowess when fake-playing the solo to Young’s ‘Down by the River.’

“Neil Young’s guitar solos are all sort of off, and oddly,” Cooper laughed to Fallon. “So the fact that some kid was memorizing it … it’s something to memorize how to play, but just to air guitar it? It’s so meaningless!”

Neil Young Recording New Album With Willie Nelson’s Sons

Neil with Lucas and Micah NelsonRolling Stone’s Andy Green wrote that Neil Young is planning a new album with Willie Nelson’s sons Lukas and Micah Nelson.

He writes in Rolling Stone:

“Neil Young sat down with Rolling Stone Executive Editor Nathan Brackett at the International Consumer Electronics Show on Jan. 7 to discuss the long-awaited rollout of his Pono music player, but he also shared details of his next LP.

“I’m working on another album now that I’m going to do be doing with Willie Nelson’s sons,” he said, jokingly suggesting he would title it The Monsanto Years after the agriculture company he’s been railing against for years. “It’s an upbeat review of the situation.”

Young was less sure about his other future plans. “I don’t know much about the future,” he said. “I want to [focus on Pono] and I want to continue playing music. Those two things should keep me pretty busy.  I have some film editing and things to do on the side. I’ll probably be writing some more books. I want to keep doing what I do. I’d like to continue doing it for a long time.”

Young’s music essential in “Inherent Vice”

Journey_through_the_pastA review of the new movie “Inherent Vice” in the magazine “Uncut” says Neil Young’s Young’s “Journey Through The Past” is critical to the film.

But we learn little else about the soundtrack, other than it is provided by Jonny Greenwood,  and is said to be: ” a beguiling mix of his own compositions (check out the loose, burbling rhythms of “Shasta Fey”) alongside Can and Neil Young.”

The film by Paul Thomas Anderson is based on a Thomas Pynchon novel, and is described as: a crazy, out-of-whack principality where the funky hippie vibes of the previous decade have been replaced by Nixon, Manson, Vietnam, urban riots and assassinations. Anxiety and remorse are the principal emotions. There’s a sticky, faintly claustrophobic tone to the film, with its talk of “karmic thermals” and heroin addicts, midday naps and shapeless days. As one character says in voiceover, “American life was something to be escaped from.”

Uncut critic Michael Bonner writes: “in the middle of all this is muttonchopped private eye Larry ‘Doc’ Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix), sporting what look conspicuously like a succession of Neil Young’s cast offs from the Buffalo Springfield days.

Bonner says Anderson uses the soundtrack to highlight flashbacks of Sportello and Shasta in happier times. “But it also serves to articulate a deeper subtext at work in Pynchon’s novel; the sadness of lost potential. Pynchon seems to suggest that “the ancient forces of greed and fear” at work in today’s world have their roots in California during the period the film is set in,” he writes.

This review is steeped in jargon and if you can get much out of it, more power to you. Really annoying when writers don’t just talk straight, instead of the pseudo-intellectual jargon.
