Record store bootleg blues

Neil Young at record store

A 1971 video of Neil Young confiscating a CSNY bootleg album from a record store was making the rounds on social media this weekend.

The rare footage shows Young meandering through a record store, discovering bootlegged albums, including a Dylan album, and leaving the store with the CSNY album, saying he should not have to pay for it.

The record store clerk is confused, doesn’t recognize Young, and they end up calling a higher-up on the telephone.

Young leaves the store with the album.

Fun viewing.

In a Feb. 2015 interview at Consequence of Sound, Neil Young said that the recent resurgence of vinyl albums is merely a “fashion statement.”

“It’s a niche and it’s a great niche and it’s a wonderful thing and I hope people continue to enjoy vinyl and it continues to grow, because it’s a good thing,” Young went on to say, before adding the caveat that we live in a “convenience-oriented society and vinyl is not a convenient thing.”

Elyse Weinberg LP features Neil Young, Nils Lofgren

elyse-weinberg-greasepaint-smile-1Exclaim.ca is reporting that the Chicago-based  Numero Group was poking around  Laurel Canyon and discovered an old, unreleased album from folk singer Elyse Weinberg. Its Numerophon imprint will be issuing the sessions, which featured Neil Young, as Greasepaint Smile on September 18.

Young  sings “Houses.”

Numerophon is The Numero Group’s vinyl-only legacy imprint. Aimed at releases featuring plaintive and old-timey folk and gospel, blues, ethnic, field recordings, the musical outpourings of Appalachia, and so on, Numerophon is a label’s evolution run backward, into what Numero might have looked like circa 1948.

Greasepaint Smile was to be the follow-up to Weinberg’s 1969 debut, Elyse. Her first album was issued by Tetragrammaton, but the label went out of business before Greasepaint Smile could be released. That said, a CD repress of Elyse in 2001 via Orange Twin had delivered two tracks from the sessions (“What You Call It” and “Houses”).

“Houses” is especially notable, as it features lead guitar from Young. Of Shakey’s “signature fuzz-tone,” Numero says that it can be heard “casting chaos over the beautiful ballad.” The song has since been covered by the likes of Dinosaur Jr. and Vetiver, among others.
In addition to Young’s guest appearance, the record also includes backup performances from the E. Street Band’s Nils Lofgren, J.D. Souther and Kenny Edwards. It was produced by longtime Crazy Horse cohort David Briggs.

Neil Young Cracks Top 40 for 40th Time: Top 7 Highest-Charting Albums

neil-youngRyan Book at Music Times writes that this week marked an interesting accomplishment for Neil Young, who debuted an album in the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 for the 40th time with The Monsanto Years, which opened at no. 21.

Book writes: “Many of the reviews for Monsanto have been mixed—either as a question of its musical content or because of Young’s politics, which tackles numerous companies including the titular Monsanto and Starbucks. Regardless of what you think about Young’s politics, and even if you dislike his style personally, you’ve got to hand it to him for having cracked the Top 40 on the albums chart 40 times. Music Times isn’t going to run through all 40 of those entries, but we’ll give you a quick rundown of the seven highest-charting albums in Young’s catalogue. You may be surprised at some that did…and didn’t…make the cut.”

Last week, Neil Young released The Monsanto Years, an agribusiness-themed concept album and a unique collaboration with Willie Nelson’s sons, Lukas and Micah, alongside Lukas’s bandmates in Promise of the Real. Now Yahoo Music is proud to premiere the accompanying The Monsanto Years film, which documents the recording of the album’s nine tracks at converted movie theater Teatro in Oxnard, Calif.

Young’s Rebel Content Tour with Promise of the Real kicked off Sunday, July 5. Each tour stop will not only include a solo acoustic set by Young plus a full electric set backed by POTR, but also “The Village of Action,” featuring information booths for local, national, and global activist groups — thus tying in to The Monsanto Years’ theme of sustainable farming, as well as other environmental and human rights issues important to Young and POTR.
