FAQ: how to post here

Sorry, I can not figure out how to post something on your blog and not
show my email address. Can you tell me how to do so?

  • – you can use the “comment function” for each post – it does NOT show your email@ on the webpage; it’s just required for the comment form (only us admins can see it); if you don’t trust us, just enter any fake email@ (like foobar@example.com) – this will work as well.
  • – for rather short shouts, use the shoutbox at the bottom left. Again, no real name or email@ required.
  • – for articles or other lengthy submissions, please use the contact form in the head-bar of this site.

This site will never publish any email@, unless you explicitely want it and we regard it as appropriate.

Any sort of spam, of course, will not show up. Cortez, the server here, is a real killer on this topic.

We are independent, noncommercial and advertisement-free !

Demme Wrapping up His 3rd Neil Flick

Does Jonathan Demme have an unusual fixation or what?

By: Tom Lanham 05/11/11 10:01 AM

Last night and tonight, at Massey Hall up in Toronto, the Academy-Award- winning director will be filming the final shows of Neil Young’s “Le Noise” tour for his concert pic that’s hitting theatres later this year. But it’s his third Neil Young-based movie!

Even the lovably eccentric – and garrulous – Robyn Hitchcock couldn’t hold the guy’s attention for this long. But the perpetually productive Young – whose new Juno-winning “Le Noise” album also snagged a Grammy for Best Rock Song, “Angry World” – is always an interesting subject.

And Demme has chosen different slants – and points in his career – from which to analyze Young. His first effort, “Heart Of Gold,” followed the CSNY legend on his “Prairie Wind” tour back in 2006.

His next, “Trunk Show,” revolved around Young’s “Chrome Dreams II” stop at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, Penn., in 2009.

So capturing his performance of the Daniel Lanois-produced “Le Noise” songs is probably a whole new animal entirely. Will Demme be satisfied with just a trilogy of Neil Young films?

Hey – George Lucas didn’t know how to quit when he was ahead, did he? For more: www.neilyoung.com.

Cortez the Killer… the Cocktail

“… OK, that’s enough of the in-depth scientific approach to cocktails. Let’s get down to a serious drink. How does Cortez the Killer sound to you?

“The drink is named after the Neil Young song of the same name, mainly because of its fluid, meandering guitar solo,” says Brent Butler, bartender at Blackbird on Market Street, and creator of this cocktail.

He’s been making batches of the drink and aging them for four weeks in a Hudson rye barrel. The recipe includes Bonal, a French aperitif wine infused with gentian, cinchona and various other herbs found in the Chartreuse Mountains in eastern France. There’s no real substitute for Bonal, I’m afraid, but it can be found at good wine stores. And it can be found at Blackbird, too, in Brent’s barrel-aged Cortez the Killer cocktails.

Cortez the Killer

Serves 1

Adapted from a recipe by Brent Butler of Blackbird in San Francisco.

2 ounces Lunazul blanco tequila
3/4 ounce Bonal aperitif wine
1/4 ounce creme de cacao
1 small orange twist, as garnish

Instructions: Place all ingredients except the garnish in a mixing glass. Add ice and stir for 15 seconds. Strain into a chilled coupe. Add the garnish.
